It started innocently enough with a short trip to the Post Office. Everything seemed perfect until I realized, before leaving, that I could not pinpoint where I left my wallet.
I looked everywhere in the house, emptied my satchel, combed through my home office, strip searched the car, drove to my University office, and found nothing. I emptied my satchel again and again but found nothing.
Where could I have lost my wallet? Usually I can find a lost item within a few minutes but I really lost my wallet this time.
I began thinking backwards about my day’s activities, and remembered I went to Walmart to buy some supplies. I surmised that I probably left my wallet on the self-checkout counter.
After speeding through the streets to Walmart, I ran to customer service, who pointed me towards the self-checkout counter, and nothing. I talked to management, interrogated a few Walmart employees, and again, nothing.
My wallet was gone.
Now my mind was racing, contemplating all the passwords I needed to reset, new credit cards I would need, new replacements of my identification cards..… AAARRRHHHH
How could I be such an IDIOT and lose my wallet?
I drove back home. Before long, my wife, Julie, was returning home from her evening PRN work. Annoyingly, she asked, “What are you looking for?”.
I sheepishly replied, “Oh, just my wallet!”.
Vaaarooop! Now Julie began an intensive cross examination, “Where did you look? Why do you always lose things? Did you cancel the Credit cards? When are you going to get your head out of your @$$?”.
Timidly, I said to Julie, “I remember putting my wallet in a brown bag with the Walmart supplies”.
Julie retorted, “Do you mean the brown bag twisted around the door knob of the utility door? Mike, it is right here, how did you miss it?”.
Amazingly, my wallet was never lost, and yet I put myself through almost two hours of torment by not seeing something right in front of my nose. Why does this happen?
Would I still be looking for my wallet if Julie didn’t find it?
Is there a deeper, soul fulfilling experience needed to be understood here, or do I simply “need to get to my head out of my ….”? LOL
